On the occasion of International Epilepsy Day, the national patient association ÉPILEPSIE FANCE is coordinating a campaign to raise public awareness of this little-known neurological disorder.
Seizures in Various Forms Epilepsy is a chronic neurological disorder characterized by the occurrence of seizures (which take various forms) that correspond to a sudden and transient disruption of the brain's electrical activity. Due to their multiple and varied presentations, the term "epilepsies" is more commonly used.
Different Causes More than 700,000 people in France are affected, representing 1% of the population, across all age groups and social backgrounds. Epilepsy can result from brain damage following a head injury, a brain malformation, a stroke, an infection (encephalitis, meningitis), a tumor, have a genetic origin, or have no known cause (idiopathic epilepsy).
Sometimes Inappropriate Treatment Diagnostic uncertainty is common: it is not unusual for epileptic seizures to be wrongly attributed to tetany or depression, resulting in inappropriate treatment that may even trigger or worsen the seizures.
Public Misunderstanding It is neither a contagious disease nor a mental illness. The prejudices surrounding epilepsy penalize those affected. They should no longer be forced to hide their condition for fear of being stigmatized or ostracized. Epilepsy remains a taboo subject. Many misconceptions still circulate, mainly due to a lack of public awareness.
