The first case of Ebola detected in France, a humanitarian doctor who returned from the Democratic Republic of Congo on June 23, has now recovered after two negative PCR tests and has been discharged from the hospital, the Minister of Health announced. He was taken into care upon arrival in Paris after his condition slightly deteriorated during the flight and was placed in isolation and monitored according to strict health protocols. Authorities have also identified five people who had been in contact with him during the journey, all of whom are self-isolating at home for 21 days.
This case, the first diagnosed in France and the first outside Africa for this epidemic involving the rare Bundibugyo strain (for which there is no vaccine or specific treatment), comes as the DRC and Uganda face a continued spread of the virus. In the DRC, at least 452 deaths have been recorded, and a case was recently confirmed in Kisangani, far from the initial epicenter. The WHO, which has issued an international health alert, has launched a clinical trial to try to develop a treatment. However, specialists consider the risk of global transmission low, as Ebola is relatively non-contagious.
